NEA Tai Chi
Play the form, dance the Tao
Randal Seyler teaches Tai Chi in Jonesboro, Ark. He is an ITCIA-certified Tai Chi instructor and has been playing and teaching Tai Chi since 1990.
While living in Morgantown, Seyler began studying the Tai Chi 24 Yang form with Mike Snyder of the West Virginia Martial Arts Association Club, a sifu of Tai Chi and Chi Lin kung fu. He later met Dr. Zhou Cheng, then a doctoral student in the WVU math department, who taught Seyler the traditional Yang long form. Dr. Cheng’s master was a direct student of Yang Cheng Fu and a kung fu brother to Cheng Man Ch'ing.
In 2004, Seyler became certified in Dr. Paul Lam's Tai Chi for Arthritis and taught that program for a decade in Fayetteville, Ark.
He has also trained with Troyce Tromer, Sheila Rae, Joanne Zeitler and Micheal Morris over the years.
In 2016, Seyler and Tai Chi instructor Dr. Laury Hamburg started the Independent Tai Chi Instructor Association.
MEET THE INSTRUCTOR
Dr. Laury Hamburg
President and co-founder of the ITCIA, Dr. Laury Hamburg, (3rd from right) now a 12-year resident of Smackover, Ark., spent the first 70 years of his life in Chicago.
He was a Full and "Distinguished" Professor with The City Colleges of Chicago. In his 38 years of college teaching, he directed two plays a year and coached prize-winning Tournament Speech Teams. His Public Speaking Textbook was used throughout the City Colleges.
While teaching tennis and physical exercise at the Homewood-Flossmoor Racquet and Fitness Club, Dr. Laury was introduced to Tai Chi in 1980. Workshops taught by Àl Chung-Liang Huang and others followed, and soon Tai Chi and Meditation became a part of the exercise class growing to be its own offering.
Laury currently teaches Tai Chi and Meditation in El Dorado, Ark., and is a proud member of the local Poets of the Pines literary club. After teaching and studying Tai Chi since 1980, Laury is amazed with how much he does not know. Every class he teaches is also a learning experience for him as well as for his students. His classes are warm, loving and healing journeys!
YANG 24 FORM
The 24-posture Simplified Form of t'ai chi ch'uan, (Chinese: 太极拳; pinyin: Tàijíquán) sometimes called the Beijing or Peking form for its place of origin, is a short version of Taiji composed of twenty-four unique movements.
The form was the result of an effort by the Chinese Sports Committee, which, in 1956, brought together four Taiji teachers — Chu Guiting, Cai Longyun, Fu Zhongwen, and Zhang Yu — to create a simplified form of Taiji as exercise for the masses. Some sources suggests that the form was structured in 1956 by master Li Tian Ji. The creators truncated the traditional family style Taiji forms to 24 postures; taking about six minutes to perform and to give the beginner an introduction to the essential elements of Taijiquan, yet retain the traditional flavor of traditional longer hand forms.
